The Holly and the Ozone

"Holly may not be celebrating the festive season !!!
This well known plant that was used to keep evil spirits at bay and bring good luck is now facing its own problems, according to two recently published studies (Environmental Pollution vol. 145, pp 171 & 355) by researchers Dr. Jon Ranford & Dr. Kevin Reiling at Staffordshire University.

They have looked at the impact of ozone air pollution over 4 years and have come across some startling results.

After subjecting young holly plants to a typical summer dose of ozone for 28 days they found these plants lost their leaves up to 4 months earlier, lost more water through their stomata and had shorter roots and shoots, than plants subjected to clean air . There were also serious carry-over effects to the plants with the following year's new leaves being lost up to 2 months earlier and significantly lower leaves being produced in the following three years after ozone exposure. A reduction in leaves means the plants will produce less photosynthetic products for growth and repair and may effect how well holly survives in its habitat. The first study also indicated a reduction in frost tolerance with more leaves being lost over the winter period, so the second study using the same method as before, then placed holly plants in special refrigerated cabinets which dropped down to -5/-10/-15 C at night. The plants subjected to ozone had significantly higher loss of electrolytes from their cells at all temperatures and had up to 30 % reduction in winter survival.

Using a technique called Chlorophyll Fluorescence the research also showed the plants were under significantly more stress if they received the ozone and the sub zero temperatures. Dr Ranford says, 'the establishment and survival of holly in the ecosytem may"

Avoid Amazon shipping fees!!

Shopping at Amazon, but want free delivery but you have not spent enough. . .

Amazon requires a £15 min spend to get free 'Supersaver' delivery, so if you’re just falling short of this amount you will have to pay money for nothing. Yet there is a cunning way round it!! Simply go to the Amazon Filler Item Finder and enter the extra amount needed to get free shipping. You’ll then see a list of all the items with prices closest to the cost of the difference. So get more, spend less. Yes, bizarrely its cheaper to buy something extra than buy nothing and pay hefty postage fees e.g. Buy an iron for £14 and you’d have to pay £5.88 P&P, a total of £19.88. Add something extra for a £1 and the price is now only £15.

So what are you waiting for, get shopping.

Bimbo Jones @ Aston Students Guild Sept. 29th

Who are Bimbo Jones?

This was a question I was asked repeatedly on the night by many of the freshers at Aston Student Guild's Pirates & Buccaneers ball! Hey, what the hell were you doing there you asking!! Good point!! Well (this will take a while), through the joys of myspace, I had been chatting to the vocalist from Bimbo Jones, the songsiren herself, Katherine Ellis. Bimbo had posted on there event calender a gig at Aston University. So... obviously in my keeness to see them play after some excellent performances in supporting Chicane, I asked Katherine where we could get tickets..... as you do. Unfortunately it was a uni gig so no tickets, but to our amazement Katherine put us down on the guest list. After a little googling to find where the gig was it also transpired to be a fancy dress do, hey hey!! To give the band a bit of support we decided to knock up some Bimbo T-shirts and hence the Bimbo Crew were formed (Dan, Nick & myself) and all the questions from the freshers.

The Bimbo Crew!

Band member DJ Lee Dagger (aka Miami Calling), came on for a set about 11pm and finally woke up the students with some great mixing (esp. Sweet Dreams, Stuck in the Siddle with You) after a so-so house DJ. The students and ourselves found our dancing shoes at last and a real buzz was forming in the hall. Just after 12, Katherine came on, sporting her pirate costume (the hair set it off a treat!) and belted out some of Bimbo Jones great tracks (see below) with Lee. The songsiren gives one of the best live performances I've ever heard and if anything sounds better at the gigs as you really appreciate how good her voice is. They finished off after about an hour of great entertainment with the classic Fuq-u, which is a belter of a track and really woke-up the crowd!

Full track Listing
  • DON'T WANT ME KNOW MORE
  • POISON HEART
  • HARLEM ONE STOP
  • MONEY
  • SUCKA
  • FUQ-U!

Bimbo Jones doing the do...

Lee carried on with another set of quality mixing with some impromptu jamming with Katherine (apart from a spell getting amongst the fans!). Bimbo Jones were very well received by the freshers who experienced a fantastic night of entertainment. The Bimbo Crew also had an exceptional night and will be lucky to top it. By the end of the night the original question had been thoroughly answered and many more people now know the Bimbo Jones phenomena!

Chicane @ Leadmills, Sheffield on Sept. 7th

Chicane do the buisness again!

Well after a short hop from Stoke across the Peak District to Sheffield we eagerly awaited another performance from Chicane. The only disappointment being that Bimbo Jones could not do the support tonight, so we had to warm up with a few beers instead!!

Nik, Ben and Dan warming up nicely!

The Leadmill is a cracking small venue and was perfect for the gig. You could basically stand where you liked (so at the front then!) and when Chicane kicked off at 8:30 its was straight into some new material. We think the first song was Turning Corners, and is a great instrumental track (with some vocals in background). Its harks back to some of Niks earlier work and will please most Chicane fans. A couple more new tracks, Nothing and Come Tomorrow, and Far Away with Dan on vocals were quicky rattled of before Spirit (Easy to Assemble) and a chilled No Ordinary Morning (Behind the Sun) with Tess on vocals which went down very well.

Chicane (from L to R) Nick and Bongo Man. Dan, Tess, Acoustic Guitar Man

Dan came back in with a very good Stoned in Love before an absolute fantastic performance of Offshore (Far from the Maddening Crowds) which really got the place buzzing and suddenly the crowd had found there voices and feet!! Tess then came in and did a roof lifting Saltwater (BtS) which was probably the highlight of an awesome perfomance. They came back for 1 encore with a Dan & Tess singing Don't Give Up (BtS) to really leave us hanging and wanting more but the Leadmill has a strict 10pm curfew apparently for live gigs!! They have promised us the new album in the New Year so we will looking fwd to that and hopefully some more gigs!!

The Stage!

*Apologies for any errors with track details etc but it was a late night!

Marathon Training.... Disclaimer!

If you happen to come across this blog and you decide to take/follow my training advice I obviously have to stick in a disclaimer*.

*Warning, doing exercise can seriously increase your health and fitness and may have long-term effects of increased life span, feeling well and improved confidence. These serious side effects will obviously need to be discussed with your Dr. Doing any of the exercises that I have suggested is at your own risk and any perceived improvements in wellbeing is bloody obvious.

Marathon training for beginners . . . . the idiots guide (as in 4 doing it)!!

Ok then, so you have seen those overweight 40 somethings run (walk) the London Marathon and your thinking I can do that. Well you probably can but if you dont want to take 6/7 hours you will need to put plenty of training in. Before we can even think of starting training for the big day we need establish a fitness base that we can build on. This will consist of overall strength training as well as the obvious running and will develop over a 16 week period. We wont even think about the focused marathon training until after Christmas.

Getting a fitness base!
Stage 1 over 4 weeks
Running: Commit yourself to 3x a week with at least 1 days rest in between each run.
2x 15-20mins at a steady pace (so you can just about talk)
1x 30-40mins at an easy pace (so you can talk easily) preferably on a Sunday morning.
Strength: Commit yourself to 3x a week on the days you are not running. Do 5 mins warm up of fast walking or v. easy jogging.
10x press up, 10x step up, 10x sit up, 10x lunges no rest in-between these!!
Have a 2 mins break and then repeat up to 4 more times!
Recovery: Make sure you have 1 day when you do none of the exercises above. Recovery is just as important as the training.

Training Tips

  • It takes about 2 weeks for the effects of training to kick in so dont expect instant results
  • Get into a routine when youre doing the training, i.e. morning, evenings etc!
  • Keep hydrated but dont drink to much water by itself. Mix 50/50 water with fruit juice to keep electrolyte balance correct or you will get cramp, especially just before/after running.
  • Never train on a full stomach, give 2-3 hours after a meal.
  • Eat properly, avoid highly processed sugar foods before training and dont gorge yourself!!
  • Never train with an injury, if you feel an injury coming on, stop!
  • Stretch if you want to but best after exercise, never stretch cold muscles.
  • Dont over do it, too much too soon will result in injury. It may feel easy at first but its all about patient build up.
